Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions, Martyrs, are a group of Chinese saints honored by the Catholic Church on July 9. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who converted to Christianity and became a priest. He is best known for his role in the early evangelization of China and his steadfast faith amid persecution.
The group includes 120 martyrs who suffered for their faith in China during the 19th century, particularly during the Qing Dynasty. They represent a diverse array of backgrounds, including priests, laypeople, and foreign missionaries. Many of these martyrs were killed during the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1901), a violent anti-foreigner and anti-Christian uprising.
Pope John Paul II canonized them on October 1, 2000, recognizing their sacrifices and commitment to the Christian faith. Their feast day serves as a reminder of the courage and dedication of those who stood firm in their beliefs, even in the face of extreme adversity and persecution.
