Saint Bernardine of Siena was a renowned Italian Franciscan priest and preacher known for his eloquence, devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, and reform of religious life. Born in Massa Marittima, Tuscany, Bernardine was orphaned at an early age and raised by relatives. After serving the sick during a plague outbreak, he joined the Franciscan Order in 1402.
As a preacher, Bernardine traveled extensively across Italy, drawing large crowds with his passionate sermons on repentance, charity, and reform. He popularized devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus, introducing the IHS monogram as a symbol of Christ's name and love. His efforts led to the widespread renewal of Christian piety and Franciscan spirituality.
Bernardine also worked to reform the Franciscan Order, emphasizing strict adherence to the Rule of Saint Francis. Despite offers of episcopal appointments, he remained committed to his missionary work and the simplicity of his vocation.
Canonized in 1450, Saint Bernardine is celebrated for his zeal, humility, and enduring legacy of devotion. His feast day is observed on May 20.
