Saint Martin de Porres, born on December 9, 1579, in Lima, Peru, was a Dominican lay brother known for his deep compassion, humility, and extraordinary charity. The son of a Spanish nobleman and a freed African woman, Martin faced racial discrimination but found solace in his strong faith and devotion to the poor.Â
He joined the Dominican Order as a lay brother, where he worked as a barber, healer, and cook, dedicating his life to serving the sick and the needy. Renowned for his miraculous healings and acts of mercy, Martin became known as the "Saint of Charity." His love extended to animals and the environment, earning him a reputation as a protector of all creation. Martin de Porres was canonized in 1962 by Pope John XXIII and is the patron saint of social justice, racial harmony, and mixed-race people. His feast day is celebrated on November 3.
